Top Tips for Drama School Auditions

Tips for Acing Your Drama School Audition

Auditioning can be a nerve-racking experience, and when it comes to Drama School, the stakes are particularly high—after all, you’re considering the next three years of your life. Here are my top tips to help you ace your audition!

Tip 1: Monologue & Song Preparation

A former teacher of mine often quoted Benjamin Franklin: “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.” This couldn’t be more accurate. Make sure to read the audition requirements thoroughly to ensure you have all the correct material prepared. Different colleges have different demands, so it’s essential to know exactly what each one requires.

If you’re ready to audition but haven’t performed your pieces for anyone yet, I highly recommend showing them to a teacher or seeking a drama school audition coach for feedback. Performing in front of someone other than a mirror or a friend will help you refine your pieces and gain valuable insights.

Tip 2: Before You Arrive

Wear comfortable clothing and style your hair in a way that won’t distract you. Avoid wearing anything brand new that you haven’t tried before, as it might cause irritation or discomfort. If you wear makeup, keep it minimal so the panel can see the real you.

Tip 3: Outside the Room

Calming your nerves before your performance is crucial. Find what relaxes you—whether it’s listening to your favourite music, a soothing podcast, or reading a few paragraphs from a cherished book. Positive affirmations can also help set a reassuring tone.

And as cliché as it sounds, breathing exercises are your friend! I recommend the 6-2-7 method: breathe in for 6 seconds, hold for 2, and exhale for 7. Repeat this as many times as needed; I usually find 2-4 rounds work best.

Tip 4: Inside the Room

Believe in yourself and your abilities. You’ve worked hard to get to this point, investing time and energy in your preparation. Visualise delivering your best performance and show the panel what you’re capable of—go for it!

Tip 5: Be Yourself

Remember to be a person first and an actor second. The panel understands you won’t be a polished finished product; they’re looking for potential and the ability to grow. Be genuine and let your talent shine. They want to see your unique qualities and are rooting for your success.

Most importantly, enjoy the experience and absorb as much as you can. Treat the audition as a valuable training opportunity, regardless of the outcome.
